Tim and I used to eat a lot of ice cream...a lot. If our friends were over, they knew if they wanted something to eat, there would be a few varieties to choose from in our freezer. I mean, you've got to have options, right? We knew that this favorite night-time treat wasn't the best option, but we just didn't know what to replace it with.
Finally I decided to see if smoothies would satisfy our evening hunger. Much to my delight, they were a hit! All of us love them, even the baby takes an occasional sip. So, they taste great, are super healthy, and the ingredients can easily be switched up so that we don't get bored with the flavor night after night.
Here is one variety that I have recently made:
2 c. chocolate almond milk
1 handful fresh spinach (rinsed and stems broken off)
6 bananas (frozen, then broken into pieces)
Add all ingredients to your blender and blend on a high speed until the mixture is smooth (about 1 minute). This makes enough to feed Tim, Trevor, and I.
Here is my rule of thumb to create any flavor of smoothie you want:
2c. milk - any variety (cow, almond, soy)
3c (or so!) fruit - any variety, but make sure that some amount of it is frozen
1 handful fresh spinach (not necessary, but adds a great, tasteless burst of nutrition!)
1T honey, peanut butter, chocolate sauce, etc - optional
Just be creative!
