Herbal Salve

Before Trevor was born, I bought a tin of herbal salve to use as diaper ointment.  I liked how it worked, but I when it ran out, I didn't feel like shelling out the money to buy more.  So, when I stumbled across a recipe to make it yourself at Homemaker's Cottage I was so excited to try it!  If this interests you, I encourage you to go to that site to get more details and much prettier pictures =)

I was anxious to start my salve, so I only made enough for one tin (because that's all the olive oil I had on hand!), so I'll walk you through the measurements that I used.

Ingredients:
1/4 c    olive oil
1/2 c    plantain leaf
1/4 oz  beeswax (use less if you want a softer salve)
            jar with lid
            crock pot
            water
            tin
            tea tree oil (optional)
            Vitamin E (optional)

Combine the olive oil and plantain leaf in a small jar.  Make sure all of the plantain is under the oil.  Seal the jar.

Put a small towel on the bottom of your crock pot, place the jar on the towel, and fill the crock pot with water until the water level covers the mixture in the jar.  Leave the lid off of your crock pot.  Turn it on low and let is sit for three days, replacing water as needed.

When the three days are up, take the jar out of the water and strain the plantain out of the oil.  I used a t-shirt and a mini strainer to strain the herbs out and a Pyrex measuring cup to strain the olive oil into.  When all the oil is squeezed from the herbs, place the Pyrex into a pan that has an inch of water simmering in it.  Add the beeswax and stir until everything is completely melted.  This is when you can add the tea tree oil (for its antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal properties) and the vitamin E (for preservation).

When your mixture is completely liquefied, carefully (it will be hot!) pour it into a tin and let it sit until it hardens. This will only take a few minutes.

I was so pleased with how easily and nicely my herbal salve turned out!  Mackenzie has been suffering with a bit of nasty diaper rash for the past few weeks and even though it didn't seem to bother her, it hurt me to look at it, so I was excited to see how this would do.  I put it on her last night and was so happy with the results this morning!  Even in just that short amount of time there was great improvement.  I love it because I don't have to worry about putting this natural salve on my baby's skin.  I love how God gave us all the resources that we need to heal our bodies.  Both plantain and tea tree oil have an incredible effect on infections, cuts, scrapes, burns, insect bites, etc.

Are there any herbal remedies that you use on your babies (or yourself!)? I'd love to hear them!

Happy Healing!
